Sunderland are still targeting a move for Wigan midfielder Shaun Maloney even though he has just penned a new deal with Latics.

Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill is a big admirer of the Scot after signing him for Aston Villa many moons ago and reports claim he tried to land him again during the January transfer window.

However Latics fought of his interest and even convinced the player to pen a new deal but that will not stop O'Neill from revisiting the situation at the end of the season.

Much will depend on what division Latics find themselves in but if they can fight off relegation again then Roberto Martinez will be in a strong position to keep hold.

Sunderland are willing to pay £2.5million for the midfielder but that figure would fall short of Wigan's valuation and all talk of a move is on hold until the summer.
