Latics boss Roberto Martinez is desperate to beat Premier League rivals to the signing of Espanyol striker Raul Tamudo.

Martinez has urged club officials to push through the signing of the 31-year-old Spanish international who is also on the wanted lists of Birmingham, Bolton, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Wolves, Hull and Blackburn.

The Latics are willing to offer the Spain striker a lucrative three-year deal, but are stalling on paying the £1.7million transfer fee because Tamudo is out of contract next season - according to Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo.
