Wolves have been handed a pre-season boost with the news that midfielder Dave Edwards has signed a new three-year deal at the club.

The Wales international played a key role in the Championship title-winning campaign with 23 starts and 21 substitute appearances last term, although he knows he faces a fight for his place in the top flight.

However, Edwards is now aiming to battle for more starts despite recognising that boss Mick McCarthy is certain to try and reinforce his squad.

"I know how hard it's going to be just to win a place in the team but I'm ready for that challenge," Edwards told Wolves' official website.

"I think it's happened almost throughout my career that I've not been in the starting line-up at the start of a season from the time I set out at Shrewsbury.

"Often new signings come in during the summer and are given the chance to show what they can do and from there it's a case of battling your way through into the team."
