Target set to stay put

Wolves' hopes of landing target Craig Gardner from Sunderland are on the wane after he was urged to stay on Wearside.

Sunderland defender Wes Brown has pleaded with Gardner to put his homesickness behind him and stay at the club.

The former Birmingham midfielder arrived at the Black Cats in the summer in a £5m deal from St Andrew's and is beginning to show exactly why he is worth every penny of that money, netting a stunning strike in the win over Swansea at the weekend.

However, their boss Martin O'Neill has revealed that the player is homesick for a return to the Midlands which in turn has alerted both West Brom and Wolves to his possible availability.

After scoring again at the weekend it is unlikely that he will be sold this January and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy may have to turn his attentions elsewhere.
